Pomerol is the smallest major AOC in the Bordeaux area. It became an official AOC in 1936.

It is located within a group of AOCs called The Libournais, near the city of Libourne. It is on the right bank of the Gironde River and just to the west of St. Emilion.

This region has high quality soil that is perfect for Merlot wine. The soil surface has stone and sandy deposits that lay on top of a layer of clay. The clay soaks up the water when it rains and then slowly distributes the moisture to the vines. This keeps them well hydrated and protects them during drier seasons.

The perfection of the soil and terrior in this region has turned it into a world class Merlot wine AOC. However, the area has not always produced such magnificent wines.

Pomerol Wine Information: History of this AOC

The Romans first planted wine in this region hundreds of years ago. Members of a religious group, who also built the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, continued the planting in this region for many years.

Although there is a long history of wine in this region, its wines were average for most of its history. This changed in the 1940s and 1950s when Jean-Pierre Moueix purchased stakes of Chateau Petrus. He had a passion for high quality wines and worked hard to increase the quality of wines at Petrus.

His success led to other wine producers in the area always trying to match the quality of his wines at Chateau Petrus. This improved the overall quality of the wine in the region. It is why Merlot wine from this area is highly regarded today.
