Napa Valley Weather Overview

Napa is beautiful almost any time of year, but there are a few times of year when it's best to book your Napa Trip.

Best Time to Visit: October

I think October is the best time of year to visit Napa Valley for two reasons. One, Napa Valley weather is beautiful during October.

It's usually not too hot and not too cool during October. The average high in October is in the mid-70s with lows in the lower 50s.

Not only is the Napa Valley weather beautiful this time of year, but it's also harvest time. During harvest, you'll see all of the wineries bustling with activities getting ready to pick or in the process of picking the grapes for the season. There are also a number of fun harvest events to participate in during your Napa trip.

Month by Month: Napa Valley Weather Overview

Although October is one of my favorite times to visit, the Napa Valley weather is beautiful most of the year. Here is the average high and low temperatures by month and a quick overview for each month to give you an idea on what to expect for your Napa Valley trip.

January, February and March

January, February and March are some of the coolest and rainiest times of the year. The Napa Valley weather for this time of year is around 60 degrees for the high and around 40 degrees for the low.

The rain is typically a light, but constant rain that can last for days. On average, Napa receives around 4 to 5 inches of rain each month during this time. The great thing about visiting during this time of year is that it's less crowded.

You are able to easily get into visit the wineries without having to wait as much as you would during the summer or fall months.

April and May

The Napa Valley weather begins to warm up a little during the months of April and May. On average, the highs are in the low to mid 70s. At night, the lows are in the mid to upper 40s.

This is the time of year when the vines begin to show signs of life. The rain also slows down quite a bit and there is very little rain during this time of year.

June, July, August and September

The summer and early fall months are when it really heats up in Napa Valley. July is usually the warmest and one of the busiest times of the year in Napa Valley.

Highs during these months are in the low to mid 80s. At times, the temperatures will reach the 90s in the warmer July and August months. At night, it will typically cool down to the mid 50s. There is also little to no rain during these months.

October

October is, again, one of my favorite times on year in Napa Valley. With highs in the mid 70s and lows in the high 40s, low 50s, it's a great time of year to visit. You will also find very little rain in the month of October. This makes it a perfect time for the wineries to begin harvest.

November and December

In November and December, the Napa Valley weather begins to cool down even more. If you are planning your Napa Valley vacation in November, you'll find highs in the low 60s.

The weather cools off to the mid 40s at night. In December, it's even a little cooler. Highs in December are in the mid 50s and lows in the lower 40s.

This is also when the rainy season begins, so you'll run into a little more rain this time of year vs the drier summer and fall months. If you've visited Napa Valley before, this can be a great time to visit if you want to avoid some of the crowds.

You'll also find some great bargains in the December time frame as many of the wineries are clearing through stock for the new year.

What to Wear

The best way to prepare for your Napa Valley vacation is to bring along layers of clothing. It cools off quite a bit at night, so you'll want to make sure you have a light jacket and pants for the cool nights in the valley.

You'll also want to make sure you wear comfortable shoes, especially if you are planning on doing any winery tours. Most tours take you to the vineyard so you can get up close to the vines and grapes.

You'll need some comfortable shoes to walk around and get as close as you can. There typically isn't a lot of walking, since most wineries have parking close by the tasting room. However, the majority of the places have standing room only tasting rooms so you'll be on your feet a lot.
