Quick and easy tips on how to open champagne safely. The steps below will have you opening champagne like a pro in no time.
I also added a few tips for those that like to pop the cork off their champagne bottle. Read the first set of steps and then head to the bottom of the page for additional tips.
Champagne is the beverage associated with celebrations. People use it to bring in the New Year, toast the union of a new couple at a wedding and for many, many other types of celebrations. They also have visions of the champagne cork popping, flying through the air and the champagne shooting out the top.
While champagne is a great beverage to use to celebrate, there is an easier and safer way to open your champagne bottle. These steps put you in control of both the cork and the champagne inside.
Step 1: Find a great bottle of champagne for your occasion. There are a number of types of champagne and there are a number of price ranges, so this can be the trickiest step.
Step 2: The next step in how to open champagne is to begin unwrapping the cork. Foil or other paper will cover the cork. Remove this first. You do not need any fancy foil cutters or paper cutters to remove the wrapping. You can do this easily by hand by peeling it off.

Step 3: After you remove the foil or paper, you might find additional wiring or other items securing the cork in place. Slowly begin removing this while placing your thumb on the cork to hold in the pressure. It is important to hold the cork in with your thumb as you remove the wrapping. This is helping to hold the cork in place under the internal pressure.
Step 4: The next step on how to open champagne is to start, slowly, removing the cork. I firmly grab it then slowly pull up on it as I twist and unscrew it. The cork will start making its way out of the bottle.
Step 5: Continue to twist and unscrew the cork until it pops out of the top. It will pop as the pressure releases, but it will not be enough for the cork to fly out of your hand. This method of removing the cork also prevents the champagne from spilling out the top when the cork pops out.
Step 6: Enjoy your champagne!
As I mentioned above, many people think that champagne only opens quickly and erratically since it is under pressure. You can open it in that manner, but it is not the only way to open Champagne.
If you want to pop the cork off your champagne, then follow steps one through three above. Once the seal is removed, gently loosen it just a little. Then, put both thumbs on the cork and push it off.
It will take a little practice to make it pop off in the same manner you see in the movies. Before you pop off the cork, make sure you point it away from guests and other breakables.
This method also causes some of the champagne to spill out of the bottle. Make sure you are near a sink so you can quickly move the bottle and catch the spilling champagne in the sink.
Popping the cork off is a fun way to get the bottle open, but gives you less control over the cork and champagne in the bottle. It is an effective method on how to open champagne, but not always the best way to open all of your bottles of champagne.
